Abstract

The recent developments in Microgrid will provide improved service reliability and better power quality to customers and also benefit local utilities by providing dispatchable loads for use during peak power conditions. The control and protection system of a microgrid is to be designed to safely operate the system in grid-connected and stand alone modes. The paper studies a typical distribution network with comprehensive microgrid systems with an aim to design an advanced protection and control scheme. The proposed integrated protection and control (IPC) unit, interfacing to the substation measurement devices and microgrid components through a substation optical Ethernet, is responsible for the protection of the distribution substation and control of its associated microgrid system.
