Travel links

UPEC 2009 recommends Traveline Scotland for full details on public transport in Scotland.

Glasgow is an extremely well connected city with excellent transport links to/from and within the city. It is served by its own international airport, Glasgow International, a short distance away and further links are provided by airports at Prestwick (30 miles or 48 km) and Edinburgh (40 miles or 64 km). Low cost air carriers also operate from these airports. There are two main-line train stations serving the UK and Scotland while a combination of Low Level and Subway services provide transport within the city and its surroundings. Furthermore, a comprehensive bus network exists within the city.

The university campus hosting the conference is just five minutes walk from George Square and Queen Street Rail Station, and only minutes from the M8 motorway. The campus is easily accessible by public transport, and is merely 9 miles along the M8 from Glasgow International Airport.

Glasgow International Airport:

Glasgow International Airport, is located just eight miles (13 kilometres) west of Glasgow City Centre and combined with Edinburgh airport (less than one hour away) services direct flights from many European and international cities.

Taxi fares from Glasgow International Airport to the city centre are usually around £15-20. A direct airport bus also operates between the city and the airport every 15 minutes. Journey times are around 15 minutes - longer at rush hour - and fares are around £3.50/£5.00 for single/return journeys. The bus terminates at Glasgow Buchanan Bus Station but makes stops at both Central and Queen Street train stations.

Approximate cost of journey is around £3.00 and tickets are purchased on the train.

Edinburgh International Airport:

Located on the outskirts of Edinburgh, Edinburgh International Airport supports a range of national and international flights. Although only 40 miles from Glasgow, there is no direct train/bus link between Edinburgh Airport and Glasgow city centre; the quickest way to reach Glasgow from Edinburgh Airport is to travel into Edinburgh city centre by bus or taxi and then take a bus or train to Glasgow city centre.

The main station within the city. This station serves trains to and from England as well as providing local trains to the south of the city. Located in the heart of the city, it is a 15 minute walk or short taxi ride from the conference venue.

Glasgow Queen Street Station:
