Abstract

Control of power systems frequency is challenging when more wind and DER resources are connected due to their intermittent nature and less contribution to inertia. Smart meter has drawn wide attention as an instrument which could save energy and improve efficiency and can be used for demand response. The loss of generation or a large variation of generation output can trigger frequency events when the existing reserve is not adequate. To arrest the frequency drop, load shedding is done disturbing the customers. Selective and controlled load blocking of domestic equipment could be an alternative which minimises the disturbances to the customer. In this paper, the use of smart meter for automatic demand management during a critical event is discussed.
