Abstract

The paper will address the off line testing of high voltage insulation systems associated with large motors and generators. A series of tests have been performed on sample coils fitted into dummy slots. Measurements of discharge were recorded at voltages up to the line voltage rating of the coil under test. Faults were introduced and measurements were retaken. The corresponding changes in the discharge activity were analysed and characteristics recorded. Information gathered in these Partial Discharge (PD) tests has proven useful in diagnosing faults with machines in the field with recognisable PD characteristics.
