Abstract

This paper presents the measured impedance at the relaying point in the presence of Thyristor Controlled Series Compensator (TCSC), one of the series connected Flexible Alternating Current Transmission System (FACTS) devices, considering its Metal Oxide Varistor (MOV) operation. The measured impedance at the relaying point depends on the power system structural and operational conditions, and especially the fault resistance. In the presence of TCSC at the near end of the line, its compensation degree as well as the connection point of the instrument transformers of distance relay, affects the measured impedance at the relaying point. Here, the measured impedance at the relaying point is presented due to concerning parameters considering MOV operation.
