Abstract

Shunt reactor switching during deenergization imposes negative impacts to the power system due to sudden interruption of inductive current. Generation of overvoltages across the reactor and the recovery voltages across the circuit breaker create conditions that could led to failures of the reactor as well as other connected equipment such as the circuit breaker grading capacitor. This paper attempts to determine the overvoltages generated and their consequences.
