Abstract

Overhead lines are capable of carrying more than their rated capacity during favourable weather conditions such as low ambient temperature and high wind speed. Dynamic Line Rating involves quantifying the additional capacity of overhead lines in real time as weather conditions change. This paper describes the learning gained using a weather and conductor temperature monitoring system and suggests areas of improvement. It will provide details on the various rating algorithms and issues with determining the current-limiting section of the line. The work described will lead to the development of a reliable and secure system to dynamically rate overhead lines, allowing increased penetration of wind energy onto the Northern Ireland Transmission Network.
